Symptoms of Test Anxiety

To manage test anxiety effectively, you first must understand its symptoms, especially when it is natural to have some mild symptoms when preparing for high-stakes exams such as the GMAT. As the gateway to the Master of Business Administration you have a lot riding on the outcome and it’s easy for this to snowball into a larger problem.

We’ve found that categorizing the symptoms of test anxiety into psychological, physical, cognitive and behavioral types, ensures our strategies address each area comprehensively. Furthermore, it makes recognizing them less challenging for students:

Psychological Symptoms:

  • Overwhelming fear about the upcoming test
  • Persistent sense of helplessness
  • Catastrophic thinking, with a focus on worst-case scenarios
  • Bad dreams

Behavioral Symptoms

  • Clenching your jaw
  • Tensing your muscles
  • Irritability or shortness with others
  • Avoidance of test prep or other test-related stimuli

Physical Symptoms:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Excessive sweating
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea or headaches in severe cases
  • Difficulties sleeping or staying asleep

Cognitive Symptoms:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Blanking out during the test
  • Racing thoughts that disrupt focus

Any one or more of these symptoms can significantly interfere with a student’s performance if not addressed.
