The GMAT is a pivotal step in your MBA journey, and selecting the right time to take it is crucial. By right time, we mean both the big picture “where is my life going” right time, as well as the specific time of year and time of day. Whether you’re a busy professional, an undergraduate student, or a career transitioner, this guide will provide you with detailed and helpful information on when to schedule your GMAT.

What Is the Best Time in Life to Take the GMAT?

Choosing the best time to take the GMAT involves considering several factors such as your application deadlines, your readiness, and your professional and personal schedule. The perfect time to take the GMAT is when you have enough prep time to achieve your target score and align it with your earliest application deadline. Typically this means starting your prep a solid 3-4 months before your first application deadline. Proper planning ensures you have plenty of time to retake the test if necessary and submit a competitive application. You can also consider taking the GMAT proactively, whenever you have a lull in work projects or a break in employment. The score is valid for five years, and taking advantage of downtime is something you’ll thank yourself for when things get busy again.

What Is the Best Time of Year to Take the GMAT?

While the GMAT can be taken at any time of year, there are certain times that make more sense. I’ll begin with the negatives. Avoid taking the exam when everyone else is, right before application deadlines in (roughly) September, December, and March. At these times appointments will be limited, and you’ll also likely be under the gun to submit applications.

Second, avoid stressful times of year, at work and personally, particularly around the holidays. No one wants to juggle having to prepare for the GMAT while also preparing Thanksgiving dinner. By focusing on downtimes after the New Year and, especially for people in finance, in the doldrums of summer, you’ll get a lot more out of your preparation and be a lot less stressed throughout the process.

What Is the Best Time of Day to Take the GMAT?

This is truly a personal decision, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Most of us have certain times of the day when we’re sharpest. This can be due to habits, your sleep cycle, and the natural daily hormonal cycle and Circadian rhythm. For many people the best time of day tends to be mid-morning. Selecting the best time of day is generally straightforward, though if you’re uncertain you can experiment by doing problem sets at different times of day to see what feels best. Also, bear in mind that testing appointments may not be available at the last minute for your preferred time of day. Once you figure out when you want to take the exam, don’t hesitate to lock in a test appointment at the appropriate time.

5 Things to Consider Before You Take the GMAT

1. Establish a Baseline

Before you set your GMAT test date, it’s crucial to take a practice exam to assess where you currently stand with your score. Establishing a baseline helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses, giving you a clearer idea of how much preparation you’ll need. Many test takers skip this step, but starting with a baseline score ensures that you can tailor your study plan to focus on areas needing the most improvement. This early assessment also provides a realistic expectation of the time required to reach your target GMAT score.

2. Your Career Goals and Best-Fit MBA Programs

Understanding your career goals and the MBA programs that best align with them is essential when deciding on your GMAT goals, which will influence your timeline. Look into the top MBA programs that fit your aspirations and make a note of their average and median GMAT scores and application deadlines. This research will help you schedule your GMAT test date well in advance to ensure your scores are available when you apply.

3. Business School Application Deadlines

The timing of your GMAT exam should be in advance of your application deadlines. Most business schools have multiple application rounds, and it’s advisable to take the GMAT at least 3-6 months before your earliest deadline so you’re not under pressure to prepare for the exam while also writing applications. This also provides you enough time to submit your best score and still allows room for improvement if you need to retake the test

4. Self-Prep or GMAT Tutoring

Decide whether you will self-study or opt for GMAT tutoring. Self-prepping can be flexible, but it may require more time, while tutoring offers personalized guidance and can help you reach your score faster and with a minimum level of stress and anxiety. If you’re unsure about your prep strategy, start by mapping out a study plan based on your baseline score and set realistic goals for improvement. For those looking for extra help, professional tutors at Apex can provide a tailored approach based on your strengths and weaknesses.

5. GMAT Test Dates Near You

If you decide to take the GMAT in-person, the availability of test dates and test centers can influence your schedule. It’s important to book early, especially during high-demand periods, to secure your desired test date. Look for local GMAT test centers and plan ahead to avoid any scheduling conflicts. Make sure you’re fully prepared by knowing the test day procedures, including what to bring with you and how to get to the testing center on time.
