If you’re planning to take the GMAT in 2022, you’ll want to start preparing now. Here are the must-have GMAT study tips for 2022 to help you get ready for the big test.

GMAT Study Tip #1: Don’t do math

If you’re doing math, you’re doing it wrong, is a core principle in the Quantitative Reasoning Section of the GMAT. The only calculations that should be done on the GMAT are the ones that come out quickly and neatly. If you find yourself solving a complicated equation, you are most probably not following an efficient solution path. Remember, there is always a better and easier way to do things. The GMAT is not testing your math skills. You need to focus on logic and the structure of the problem rather than rely on doing the math.

GMAT Study Tip #2: Look for alternative solution paths

When you arrive at the correct answer, that should be just the beginning. You should always be looking for shorter solution paths and shortcuts when you are solving problems. There is almost always another solution that will work better and take less time, so don’t stop there!

GMAT Study Tip #3: Memorize Data Sufficiency answer choices

Data Sufficiency is a unique question type that can be very challenging for GMAT test-takers. The best way to approach these questions is to memorize the five answer choices and what they mean.

On every Data Sufficiency question the answer choices are in the following order:

(A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient
(B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient
(C) Both statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient
(D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient
(E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient

When you solve a Data Sufficiency question, you should immediately know which answer choice is your answer. By memorizing the answer choices, you can save time on the GMAT and avoid getting confused by the long sentences.

GMAT Study Tip #4: Don’t overuse practice exams

This probably might sound like one of the most counterintuitive GMAT study tips one has heard of. But let us explain the logic behind it. While practice exams are a great way to prepare for the GMAT, they are usually misused and mistaken for a study tool. If you find that you are not making much progress on your practice exams, it is probably because you are relying too heavily on them. Instead of focusing on how your score is improving, focus on how your understanding of the GMAT is improving. Direct your attention to the process and the score will take care of itself – be process-oriented, outcome agnostic.  Remember, when you are doing practice exams, you are putting your knowledge to the test, you are not learning. Keep in mind that you would have to spare two to three hours taking these GMAT mock exams. that could be spent on beneficial prep.

GMAT Study Tip #5: Study under a time constraint ONLY once you’ve achieved mastery

One of the biggest mistakes GMAT test-takers make is studying under a time constraint before they are ready. If you try to do too much too soon, you will only end up feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. A better approach is to focus on mastering the material first and then gradually introduce time constraints.

GMAT Study Tip #6: Be consistent in your GMAT prep

It is important to pace yourself and not to try to accomplish too much at once or try to cram everything in at the last minute. When it comes to the GMAT prep, consistency is key. A regular study schedule will help you make steady progress and ensure that you are fully prepared on test day. You can come up with a GMAT study plan for your schedule or follow one. Being consistent in your prep will help you stay motivated and focused.

GMAT Study Tip #7: Visit the testing center prior to your exam

One of the best ways to reduce stress on the test day is to familiarize yourself with the testing center. If you have never been to the testing center before, it is a good idea to visit it a few days before your GMAT exam. This will help you feel more comfortable on the test day and reduce the chances of getting lost or feeling overwhelmed. Our blog is the best place to get all the information you need about your center.

GMAT Study Tip #8: Feed your brain for success

Read publications such as The Economist, Financial Times, and Time Magazine. Reading these publications will help you stay up-to-date on current events, which is important because GMAT questions are often based on current events.

GMAT Study Tip #9: Take care of yourself
